The Ocean Beach community to the west has more local businesses within reach that includes many dog-friendly restaurants and specialty pet shops.

Winter is mild, with temperatures well above freezing and warm weather is the norm. Some precipitation and overcast days occur in the springtime which can impair visibility. Wait until fog burns off later in the day for a better chance of sunny, blue skies.

Point Loma is bordered by Point Loma Avenue and Chatsworth Boulevard on its south side, Nimitz Boulevard on the east side, the San Diego River and Midway Drive on the north, and Froude Street on the west side. The neighborhood is mostly residential with several main, more heavily trafficked thoroughfares including Catalina Boulevard, Nimitz Boulevard, Narragansett Avenue, and Voltaire Street.

The terrain in the area is hilly and people and pups will need to trek up and down hills to get around the neighborhood. Homes on the southern section of Point Loma are mostly single-family detached homes, while apartment and housing complexes are more common on the north side of the community.

The Famosa Slough State Conservatory is located on the north side of Point Loma and provides natural wetlands, a pond, and waterway that connects to the river. This makes a great destination to head to with your pooch.

Point Loma Heights canines are well situated to enjoy Dusty Rhodes Park which is just northwest of the community and is a large waterfront park with a designated dog area for off-leash fun. This enclosed dog park has separate areas for large and small dogs and amenities like doggie water fountains and waste disposal bags. Be sure to supervise and pick up after your pet and make sure your dog is licensed and vaccinated.

Point Loma has two developed parks. The Bill Cleator Community Park and Collier Neighborhood Park have sports fields and recreational amenities, lawns and shade trees, and paved paths which make excellent walking locations to visit with your leashed pet.

On the north side of Point Loma is the  Famosa Slough State Conservatory. This 37-acre natural area has a lake and creek joining the river. There is a 1.3-mile trail with a natural dirt surface. Your dog should remain leashed at all times as this is a habitat for local wildlife.
