Shelltown is a southeast San Diego, California neighborhood located a 10 minute commute from the central business district of the city. This is a walkable neighborhood with corner convenience stores that are easily accessible and a shopping area on the northeast side where a grocery store and fast food outlet are located.

The climate in San Diego is ideal for strolls with your pup and inclement weather will not prevent you from taking them out regularly. Hot summer days may require you to adjust your schedule to take your dog out in the morning or evening when temperatures abate somewhat. Winters have temperatures well above freezing, so you don't need to bundle up for cold weather. May and June in San Diego are known for being overcast and foggy with some precipitation. Coastal communities like Shelltown are more prone to lingering fog which impedes visibility, so exercise caution in the earlier hours.

Shelltown is bordered by Interstate 5 on the west, North Highland Avenue on the east, Division Street on the south, and Gamma Street on the north. This is a mostly residential area with some commercial activity. The area's topography is somewhat hilly, although most slopes are gentle and not steep, so people walking their dogs do not have difficulty walking the area. The region was named for the sandy soil that contains many shells and its proximity to the coast.

Homes in the area were mostly developed between 1920 and 1969, and reflect the architecture of that time. There is a more commercial region on the west border near the freeway. This area has noise, activity, traffic, and is not ideal for pedestrians and pets. Quieter residential and natural areas are more desirable for walks with your furry friend. The Cholas Creek floodplain and watershed are located on the north side and a natural greenway is also located here.

The park is situated on what was formerly a freeway corridor. It features facilities such as a skatepark, playground, gazebos, an amphitheatre, a basketball court, barbecue grills, and picnic sites. A 13-minute drive to the west, dog owners can take their pets to Coronado Beach and Dog Park. There is parking available on Ocean Boulevard and you should keep your dog leashed until you get to the marked off-leash dog zone. This park is open 24 hours a day and gives local canines a great opportunity to play in the surf. Doggie waste bags are available at the entrance to the dog run.
