Tierrasanta is a neighborhood located in the northern section of San Diego, a 20-minute commute from the central business district. The neighborhood is surrounded by natural terrain and is referred to as "The Island in the Hills" by residents. Due to its isolated nature, walking to adjacent neighborhoods is not feasible, however, there are several commercial areas in the neighborhood that are walkable, including the Terra Santa Shopping Center and several other commercial spaces with local restaurants and shops. The neighborhood also has a recreation center, a YMCA, and a library, as well as many schools and local churches.

Dog owners will find a variety of pet services in the area, including two veterinarians, the Tierrasanta Veterinary Hospital, and the Pet Hospital of Tierrasanta, as well as a highly rated pet supply store, Pet Food Plus. There are two dog wash businesses located in Tierrasanta and local restaurant Andiamo Ristorante Italiano advertises that dogs are welcome in their outdoor seating venue.

Tierrasanta is surrounded by natural areas which separate it from surrounding urban neighborhoods.  The north side of the region is bounded by the Mount Soledad Freeway. The Mission Trails Regional Park is on the east, the Interstate 15 corridor is on the west, and the San Diego River is on the south. Canyons and hills with sage and chaparral extend into the community, separating the several residential enclaves and commercial areas.

Homes in the area consist of beautiful single-family dwellings with well landscaped and maintained yards that make an attractive backdrop when walking with your pet. The terrain in the area is hilly and, when walking with your pet, you will need to trek up and down some hills. The elevation changes can be an issue for people or pets with mobility problems but there are separate sidewalks along residential roads that provide safe walkways for you and your dog, although you should still keep your dog leashed.

Your furry friend will have no shortage of natural terrain or manicured greenways for outings in the Tierrasanta neighborhood. The Mission Trail Regional Park on the east side occupies 5,800 acres with miles of hiking trails. The terrain in the area is rugged and elevation changes on some trails can be steep. Your dog should remain leashed in this vast wilderness area to prevent escapes and to protect them from unwanted encounters with local critters such as rattlesnakes and coyotes.

Natural areas extending into the Tierrasanta neighborhood, such as Shepherd Canyon, have hiking trails that are closer to home. The Tierrasanta Open Space is considered to be one of the largest urban parks in the US and occupies 818 acres of natural terrain.

Neighborhood parks provide green spaces as well that are a bit more tame. There is a green space associated with the Tierrasanta Recreation Center which has numerous recreational facilities, some of which are lighted, and may be a good option for a walk with your dog.
