Bernal Heights North has steep inclines and is located on a large hill that overlooks the surrounding San Francisco neighborhoods and skyline. The hill features open parkland, rocky terrain, grassland, and local wildlife. The community does not have a lot of thru-traffic and, although a busy district, traffic tends to be local and more vigilant of pedestrians walking with their pets in the area.

Most residences in the district are single-family homes with various architectural styles. Houses are closely set on narrow lots with well-treed and landscaped backyards. Most homes have parking at street level and living space on upper floors. When walking with your dog in Bernal Heights North, you will have to navigate a lot of steep hills. You might want to take water for both you and your pet on hot days and dress in layers that can be shed as the temperatures warm up throughout the day.

Also located in Bernal Heights North is a long strip of green space known as Precita Park which provides an open grassy area, stretching for 3 city blocks with benches to provide seating along the park's perimeter.
