Glen Park is a small neighborhood located near the south side of San Francisco. The neighborhood has a pleasant atmosphere and is referred to as a 'village' by locals. It is adjacent to Glen Canyon Park which is a massive city park that surrounds a deep canyon. The neighborhood is also famous for its annual Glen Park Festival which features music, dancing, food, art, and sporting events, as well as endeavors to raise money for local children’s programs.

San Francisco has its own unique weather where the temperature hovers between 55-65 degrees almost year round. Because of its proximity to the bay, it is a windy, chilly city no matter the season. You will probably want to wear a jacket or windbreaker, especially if you are walking at night. However, the city is still beautiful and ideal for dog walking as long as you take the proper precautions on cool days.

The terrain in San Francisco is famously hilly and this rule holds true for the Glen Park area. There are tons of steep inclines and dramatic shifts in elevation as most of the homes and businesses are built around winding, beautiful hills. The neighborhood slopes down from north to south, meaning that the points of highest elevation are at the top of the neighborhood in spots like Billy Goat Hill and the lowest elevation is at the very southern border of the neighborhood on San Jose Avenue.

You won’t see as much street or foot traffic in Glen Park as you will in the rest of the city because the neighborhood is mostly residential with only a few small businesses within its borders. The terrain and traffic levels are good almost everywhere in Glen Park for dog walking, as long as you can withstand the sharp elevation changes. Go prepared with good footwear.

There are four main parks and greenways in Glen Park: Diamond and Farnum Open Space, Walter Haas Playground, Billy Goat Hill, and Fairmont Plaza. Walter Haas Playground is the largest, stretching a little over four acres. It has a large playground as well as a dog run which is its very own space, specifically made for dogs to play. There are lots of open green spaces and long trails for walking with your pup, so you should be able to explore quite a bit.

Diamond and Farnum Open Space is a small grassy area located between two houses in the western part of the neighborhood. It is owned by the San Francisco Parks Department and is a good, casual spot to take a dog. A few blocks to the east is Fairmont Plaza which rests at the top of a hill. It is a grassy, tree-covered area that is a popular spot for bird watchers and dog walkers alike.
