Merced Manor is on the west side of San Francisco and is bordered by a business district and San Francisco State University to the south, Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove to the north, and Balboa Terrace to the east. This is a residential neighborhood with homes in straight, even blocks throughout the area. The only non-residential building in this neighborhood is the Merced Manor Reservoir which is not open to the public.
Just south of Merced Manor, Sirius Puppy and Dog Training can provide high-quality training for your dog of any age. The Dog Spa can give them excellent grooming very near to the neighborhood while the proximity of Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove, as well as the beach, offer you diverse options in exploring this area. Just across Eucalyptus Drive to the south, the Rolph Nicol Junior Playground offers a nice little tree covered area for you to enjoy with your pup.
Throughout the rest of the reservoir, there's only a low wall so you can get out of the sidewalk. For more varied terrain, you should venture to the Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove where there is plenty of mature forest for you and your dog to amble through, as well as a pleasant grassy area in the middle which is perfect for a game of fetch. The Stern Grove Dog Park is a great place to let your dog play off-leash with their friends in the shade.
Merced Manor is lucky enough to sit adjacent to the beautiful Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove. This extensive forested area provides a wonderful place for you to explore a wilderness with your dog, especially around Pine Lake where your pup can test her footing on a natural shoreline and smell all of the wildlife that has come to drink from the lake.
You can head west from the grove towards the San Francisco Zoo and the beach. While your dog will not be allowed to go into the zoo, the smells and sounds from it will be an interesting diversion from the typical neighborhood walk.
The beach is a wonderful place to walk with your pooch, especially if they have hip or elbow problems as the high resistance and low impact of the sand and shallow water is therapeutic for joint issues. You can also visit Golden Gate Park and its beautiful manicured trails around lots of lovely water features.
