Rincon Hill is located on the San Francisco Bay, just south of the downtown financial district. The neighborhood is easily accessible to commercial areas and shops in the surrounding communities of San Francisco’s central business district and there are some restaurants, shops, and services located at street-level. Residential development of the area has been hampered by the presence of the elevated freeway nearby and the neighborhood is less walkable than many San Francisco neighborhoods. However, there are plenty of nearby businesses for local patrons to get to on foot.

The weather in this coastal neighborhood is warm year round with temperatures comfortable for walking. However, rain and fog can be an issue early in the day but fog tends to burn off earlier in the day along the Bay than on the west side of the city and usually lifts to reveal a bright sunny day ideal for walking and enjoying views of the water and city.

Rincon Hill is a relatively small neighborhood and is one of the original, historic, 'Seven Hills' of urban San Francisco. The Rincon Hill is about 100 feet tall and pedestrians in the area will experience steep inclines to cover the terrain. Traveling on foot in the region requires strenuous effort to get around the neighborhood. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Freeway hampers walking in the southernmost region of the neighborhood and connects to the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, bringing lots of heavy traffic and noise through the community. Streetscapes are lined with multi-story apartments, office towers, and several high rise skyscrapers. Residents of the area live in apartment buildings, often with commercial spaces at street level. This area is situated near the financial district and with its high rise buildings, this region is well developed and urban with lots of pavement, parking garages, offices, and apartment towers.

For such an urban environment, Rincon Hill has several green spaces including a dog-friendly area. Rincon Hill Dog Park has two fenced-in off-leash areas, one for large dogs and one for small dogs. The dog park has trees, seating for people, and water stations for thirsty pups. Rincon Park features a bow and arrow sculpture, 'Cupid's Span', and a promenade along the waterfront of the Bay. The San Francisco Bay trail runs right along the park. This greenway along the bay is 350 miles in length which should provide plenty of exercises even for the most energetic of pups! Watch out for cyclists and joggers on this trail and keep your dog on a leash. You will need to be prepared to clean up after your pet!

Another park located in the neighborhood, Emerald Park, is a small half-acre park with a play structure in Rincon Hill and provides a welcome green space to take a break.
