South of Market, often referred to as SoMa, is a very large neighborhood district in Downtown, San Francisco. It encompasses several smaller sub-neighborhoods and is a diverse mix of warehouses, commercial spaces, and residential areas. For walkers and their furry companions, it holds no less allure between the long streets of shops to look at on a morning walk and the beautiful waterfront parks and trails. There are pet stores in the area as well as a vet and grooming facilities. For you, there is food and drink everywhere!

Weather in San Francisco is incredibly mild with temperatures staying between 50 and 75 degrees year around. Rain and wind are really the only things that might stop you from walking and, since there are many more dry days than wet ones, you won’t find it to be that much of a deterrent to your daily walks.

This area of San Francisco is surprisingly flat, considering the number of hilly neighborhoods that the city is famous for. For those who are just out to get fresh air for their pet or to burn off a bit of energy before you head to work, this is probably the perfect terrain for you. You can knock out a few blocks of walking, make Fido happy, and head to work without breaking too much of a sweat.

Of course, if you have it in your mind to combine your daily exercise with Fido’s walk, then you might have to come up with some more creative solutions or head to one of the nearby neighborhoods that have more than enough hills. This is an urban area, so do not expect much in the way of greenery. There are a fair number of trees but that is about it. If you want grass, you will have to travel a bit.

You can head to the water to find a few patches of grass as well as the sea breeze that most find so relaxing. The Sue Bierman Park is a block off the water and has a large green field with walking paths that will allow your dog a bit of play time while you both get some exercise in. There is also a fountain and, if you have been walking a while, you will find a public restroom and water as well.

Rincon Park is right on the water and offers access to the San Francisco Bay trail which runs up and down the bay and has green spots alongside that make great places to stop.

Inland, you can find another trail and some greenery at the Mission Creek Park. In Central South of Market, there is also a small park called the Yerba Buena Gardens that have a large public space with grass, trees, and shade.
