Sunnyside is a small, largely residential neighborhood that is less than five miles away from the heart of San Francisco, California. The residential community is usually composed of standalone, single-family homes. For being such a small neighborhood, there are still plenty of options for restaurants, a grocery store, nearby access to public transportation, and several greenways. Sunnyside is also home to a public elementary school, a pre-school, a private Catholic school, a conservatory, and the Ocean Campus of the City College of San Francisco.

Like much of California's coast, San Francisco and Sunnyside have a mild climate with few dramatic swings in temperatures. The summers are dry while the majority of the rainfall occurs during the winter months. It is likely you may feel a breeze coming in from the Pacific Ocean, helping to keep this neighborhood relatively cool and perfect for a walk with your pup at your side!

Sunnyside is quite hilly and is even close to the highest point in San Francisco, Mt. Davidson. So you and your pup are likely in for a bit of a workout, no matter what route you choose to take. This can be a bit difficult with a dog who is less than active or has joint issues, so prepare accordingly. Additionally, Sunnyside is largely made up of artificial terrain. Thankfully, most of the neighborhood, even the more residential areas, have a well-maintained sidewalk, so you and your pup won't have to share the roadways with heavy traffic.

Sunnyside is bordered by Miraloma and Glen Park to the north, Mission Terrace and Balboa Park to the east, Ingleside to the south, and Westwood Park and Westwood Highlands to the west. Additionally, to the east, Sunnyside is bordered by the Southern Freeway, so pedestrians may want to avoid this high-speed, high-traffic area as it can get busy.

For being such a small neighborhood, Sunnyside actually has quite a few greenways to choose from! These include Dorothy W Erskine Park, Sunnyside Conservatory, Sunnyside Playground, and Baden and Joost Street Mini Park. Dorothy W. Erskine Park is particularly popular with dog-walkers as it offers some of the best views of the city if you're willing to hike up some hills! Sunnyside Playground, besides having a children's playground, also has a picnicking area and a general recreation area. Dogs are welcome, but must remain leashed at all times. Unfortunately, no dogs are allowed on the grounds of Sunnyside Conservatory.

If you and your pup are looking for a bit more exercise or adventure, there are two larger parks nearby. These are Glen Canyon Park and Mt. Davidson Park. Both boast hiking and walking trails as well as spectacular views of San Francisco. Mt. Davidson is also said to be the highest point in the city, so exercise caution in this area.
