Westwood Highlands is a little neighborhood southwest of San Francisco. It is bordered by Sherwood Forest to the north, Monterey Heights to the west, Westwood Park to the south, and Highway 280 to the east. This neighborhood was developed in the early 1900s after a hugely damaging earthquake and resulting fires. The Twin Peaks Tunnel was opened in the course of reconstruction which allowed construction to extend into the hills around Westland Highlands.

Unlike the eclectic mix of architecture that predominates in the hills in this area, this neighborhood was carefully designed for efficiency and cohesion. This is a commuter neighborhood so there are not many businesses in the area, but there are a few places for your canine. The Upper Douglass Dog Play Area will be your dog’s favorite place to go to play off-leash with their friends. The Dog Spa will have your pup looking her best in no time.

Walking through this neighborhood with your dog is a lot of fun! The homes are truly beautiful with a unique style that features lots of details like terraces, porches, and charming brick fireplaces. There is a unity in the design of the homes that gives a sense of grace to the flow of the neighborhood, but homes are not left looking cookie-cutter similar. Individual tastes in paint, trim, and landscaping go further to set each house apart. Some of the landscaping is really spectacular, featuring perfectly manicured topiaries.

The sidewalks on both sides of the road don’t have dividers between them and the sidewalk and roads tend to slant unexpectedly, although not as steeply as other part of San Francisco. This isn’t the best neighborhood for being on wheels. However, it isn’t hard to find a change and a challenge in Westwood Highlands if you're particularly adventurous. Just head for Mt. Davidson to get a chance at real mountain climbing.

Mt. Davidson can be a really fun place to explore with your dog. The area sits right outside of your neighborhood, but this a steep mountain, so remember to never push your dog too hard and only extend a little past where you’ve pushed before. You can choose your difficulty level by sticking to well laid out paths or trying your luck off the path. Trails have steps on the steepest areas to make exploration safe for any adventurer. The forested part of this mountain is quite dense, but offers welcome shade on hot California days.

If you would prefer canyon to mountain, Glen Canyon Park is a great place to go. You can stick to the easy, flat canyon path or try your luck at some of the more challenging paths up the side of the canyon. This park also has a great forested area to get away from the sun and wind.
