Located in northern San Francisco, the Zion District is a region with residential and commercial activity. Named for the several churches and medical center in the area bearing the “Zion” name, the area is rich with a variety of church buildings and properties. There are medical centers and hospitals in the area and many different types of businesses making the area walkable as residents can access necessary services on foot. Restaurants, shops, and other services are well distributed in the district on busy thoroughfares such as Van Ness Street and Geary Boulevard.

The temperature in San Francisco is usually ideal for walking with relatively warm temperatures. Cool breezes off the ocean mean that extreme heat waves are mitigated and a light jacket for cooler periods is usually sufficient. Fog is a common occurrence in San Francisco and can reduce visibility significantly. When dense fog is present, be careful crossing streets as motor vehicles cannot see pedestrians well.

The landscape in the Zion District is hilly, as is much of San Francisco. Although most hills in this area are not especially steep, there are some significant inclines that require effort when traveling on foot. Make sure you and your dog do not overdo hiking in the neighborhood on hot days and are prepared for some climbs.

There are many historical homes in the area as this is an older neighborhood with a long history of development. Some newer buildings and residences are also present. There are apartment buildings and lots of single family homes set close together on narrow properties with lots of trees and landscaping in backyards. This neighborhood also has some mature shade trees on street fronts to provide shelter to pedestrians.

The Zion District has plenty of sidewalks to keep you separate from roadways and there are lots of playgrounds, small parks, and church and school properties with green landscaping throughout the region.

Panhandle Park is several blocks south of the Zion District and this long, narrow park is 3/4th of a mile long and one block wide. The park has two greenways running through it, one of which allows cyclists while the other which is restricted to pedestrians. Panhandle Park is a beautiful space with lots of trees and open spaces to enjoy with your pooch.

A little further to the west, the iconic Golden Gate Park provides over 1000 acres of natural and recreational space. This park has many unique features including an aquarium, carousel, and bison pen. Much of the park is treed and there are also large open lawns with greenways meandering throughout the park which provide plenty of opportunities for dog walkers to take in the sights located here. There are several off-leash areas in the park and an enclosed off-leash dog area with agility obstacles.
