The Upper Truckee River is the most prominent river flowing into Lake Tahoe and is therefore well-known by locals of the area. It's also a common detour for tourists who are seeking a river rafting adventure. The waters of the river are sourced from Red Lake Peak of the nearby Sierra Nevadas. The community of South Lake Tahoe, known as the Upper Truckee areas, gain their name from this river but also from the N. Upper Truckee Road.

A portion of this community suffered a fire in 2007, which unfortunately destroyed hundreds of homes. Since then, the Upper Truckee area has become a popular space for couples to build their dream houses. Lots are coveted as they potentially offer views of nearby mountains, such as Echo Summit, as well as easy access to nearby camping sites and hiking trails. When a weekend excursion is on the agenda, locals vouch for short commutes to coffee shops, grocery stores, and gas stations nearby.

Pines and spruces grow aplenty along Upper Truckee Road and its surrounding neighborhoods. The natural landscape of the area gives residents a sense of privacy and serenity which are best enjoyed on a walk, jog, or hike. While a canine companion is sure to be grateful for the exercise, their two-legged owner can enjoy the surrounding views.

Practice caution when walking around this community as sidewalks are scarce. There are a number of curves on this road as well which call for extra caution. North Upper Truckee Road itself is wide, freshly-paved, and has enough grassy shoulder for pedestrians to walk on.

Having a few safety precautions on hand will ensure your walk is enjoyed as safely as possible. If you walk your pet in the early mornings or late evenings, they should be outfitted in reflective gear just like you are. Retractable leashes aren't recommended and a harness, rather than a collar, help keep your pet more secure.

Tahoe Paradise Park is a local favorite for its long list of amenities including a playground, picnic tables, grills, a lake, hiking trails, sports courts, and more. Tahoe Paradise Park even has a reservable clubhouse which is popular for all special occasions in life. Dogs are allowed as long as they are leashed.

Washoe Meadows State Park serves as a partial eastern border to the Upper Truckee area and is natural with local flora growing wild. The lack of manicured footpaths means that this state park is typically untouched by South Lake Tahoe tourists, giving you and your dog a natural paradise to enjoy without the usual crowd.

Without a challenging amount of elevation gain, Aloha Lake Trail, which offers views of Echo Lake, is a frequented hiking loop. If you hit the trail early, you may be able to enjoy it with little distraction. This moderate hike is ideal for people who love to hike but don't want to navigate steep inclines.
