Barkhamsted is a small town in Litchfield County, Connecticut. The area encompasses seven villages, the American Legion State Forest, The Peoples State Forest, and the Barkhamsted Reservoir. Barkhamsted is a rural area, home to lots of varied walking opportunities. It is a great area for dogs that are full of beans and the abundance of natural space means that there is plenty of space for them to burn off some of that energy! Walking here is a real joy as it offers spectacular scenery, well-kept parks, and diverse wildlife. The area is great for doggies that always seem to have their snout in some kind of mischief. There is plenty to keep you entertained.
The area sits northwest of Hartford where you can find an array of dog-friendly amenities including dog parks, walking trails, and greenways. Many of the town's shops also welcome well-behaved dogs. East Windsor Dog Park and Paw Meadow Dog Park come highly recommended.
Barkhamsted offers varied terrain. It includes flatter areas such as parts of the Peoples State Forest which are perfect for older dogs who might want to take it a little more slowly. But there are also lots of challenging terrains which any energetic pup is sure to love. Much of the area is covered in forest and walking in the forest has lots to offer but be sure to bring a map!

Nature is never far away and the diverse wildlife means that there is lots to see and explore. However, it is a rural dwelling and you will need to travel to neighboring towns to pick up supplies. Little traffic in the area means that it is generally not a concern.
Barkhamsted has an abundance of greenways. The American Legion Forest sits just south of Riverton. Dog walking here is challenging due to the terrain but very rewarding as the scenery in the forest is spectacular and the area is home to a wide range of wildlife. The forest is a great place for those that like to walk without bumping into others.
The Peoples State Forest is another great place to bring your dog. In some areas, your furry friend will have to remain on-leash, but in others, they will have free roam. The area is spacious and is a great spot to throw a frisbee or ball will your pooch. Both forests offer great walking so your pooch is sure to love exploring all that is on offer. Some of the terrains can be challenging so it is important to ensure that both you and your pup are up to the task before you set off!
