Brightwood is a suburb of Washington, D.C. and is largely an urban environment. The greenways come from a local recreation center and a nearby golf course. Because of the urban environment, however, you and your furry friends will have access to plenty of sidewalks.

Additionally, Brightwood does have a few hills throughout the neighborhood, so you and your pup will certainly get a workout in while out for a walk. However, if you plan your walking route strategically, you can find some routes with only moderate changes in elevation.

The boundaries of Brightwood include Aspen Street and Tuckerman Street to the north, Georgia Avenue and 4th Street to the east, Missouri Avenue and Military Road to the south, and Joyce Road and the Rock Creek Park Golf Course to the west. 16th Street and Georgia Avenue are the two major roadways through Brightwood and they may have more traffic than other areas of the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, there is only one public greenway located in Brightwood. Fort Stevens Recreation Center and its respective greenways are home to a few sports courts and fields and a few places to stop and rest. Additionally, there are four unnamed greenways located in triangular intersections in the southern part of the neighborhood.

The second greenway in the neighborhood is a golf course and, unfortunately, even leashed pups are not welcomed. However, the Rock Creek Golf Course is adjacent to Rock Creek Park. Operated by the U.S. National Park Service, Rock Creek Park is a 1,700-acre public greenway with miles of walking trails, access to water recreation, and a small dog park. Other nearby greenways include Fort Slocum Park, Fort Totten Park, Brightwood Recreation Area, and Jesup Blair Local Park.

The nearest dog park, Ellsworth Urban Dog Park, is located a few miles north of Brightwood and has a fenced-in area for both small and larger breeds.
