Higbee's Daytona is a small neighborhood fronting the Halifax River of single-family homes, multi-family homes, condos, and apartments. As an older section of town, the community is heavily shaded. Living here puts you within a reasonable driving distance of a wide selection of restaurants, including the famous Chart House.

Like most of Daytona, there are plenty of dog-friendly parks in the area for you to check out. When it comes to pet supply stores, there are several within driving distance along with groomers and a pet resort.

Living in Daytona means going to the beach on Christmas Day and hiding in the air conditioning in July and August. Winters tend to hit the 50s in December and 40s in January. Summers, on the other hand, can expect weeks in the 90s and triple digits with humidity levels running in the same vein. During the summer months, you should plan your walks for early morning hours to keep cool.

The terrain here is like most of the Dayton Beach area: sandy and flat. Some of the streets do, however, have sidewalks for you and Fido to go walking on. Some even have grassy berms for your pup to be able to walk when the pavement is too hot. Just remember, always clean up any mess your dog leaves behind.

If walking on flat ground seems a bit dull, you have to learn how to think "outside the block" or be ready to do more than just go around the same block day after day. Try walking around the block in different directions or going around different blocks. The extent of your excursions is limited only by your imagination!

Keep in mind that Fido needs lots of good healthy exercise just as much as you do. Start out slowly and take short walks at first, working your way up to going for long hikes all over town.

There are two green spaces nearby for you and Fido to check out. The first is the Samuel L. Butts Archeological Park with a large lake in the middle for you to fish in. There is a trail running all around the perimeter of the lake for you and Fido to walk or jog on. The park is located on the site where Samuel L. Butts discovered skeletal materials determined to part of a mastodon thought to have lived in the area at the time of the ice age.

To the east, another park sits right on the Halifax River. This park is an excellent place to take Fido out for a walk. Keep in mind that, despite the wide-open grass sports fields, you need to keep Fido on a leash and make sure you have waste bags on hand, just in case they should happen to drop a landmine on the turf.
