Ocean Dunes South is a somewhat unusual neighborhood in the Greater Daytona Beach area in that you will find very few kids living here. Currently, Ocean Dunes South seems to be enjoying life as a singles community with a higher percentage of women than men. Homes here are a mix of older and newer homes. There are plenty of sidewalks to take your four-legged friend out for a walk on.

One vital concern to keep in mind is that both sidewalks and streets are hot enough by mid-afternoon in the summer to burn the pads on your pooch's paws in no more than a few seconds. If you do plan to take your pup on a long walk, be sure you head out in the early morning before the temperatures start to rise. Not only will this help protect their paws, but it is a much more pleasant time of the day to be out walking.

Unlike some parts of Central Florida where the land is hilly, the ground in Ocean Dunes South is flat and unremarkable. While land such as this may not seem like much of a challenge, if your pup is out of shape or a bit on the pudgy side, flat ground is probably the perfect place to get him or her started on their way back to a good weight and better health. The only real way to make good use of flat terrain like this is to vary the route you take each day and extend the length of your walks over the course of time. Then, of course, there is the beach at the end of the block. Here, you can choose between soft sands that test your muscles with every step or wet sand that is just soft enough to be comfortable to walk on.

Beachside Daytona is notoriously short on actual 'green spaces' such as public parks, woods, and trails. But there are those who would say the area has one of the greatest green spaces in the world. This would be the 'World's Most Famous Beach' itself. Beach conditions change daily but are an incredible mix of soft dry sand that sucks at your feet, making walking very strenuous for you and your pup and wet sand that has a somewhat spongy feel to it but is easy to walk on.

There are several dog-friendly parks over on the mainland side within driving distance including nearby Tomoka State Park in Ormond Beach and Tuscawilla Park on International Speedway Drive and Nova Rd. Both of these parks offer plenty of shady trails for both of you to explore when the sun seems to be trying to fry you where you stand.
