Rawlings Ridgewood Park is a tiny neighborhood on N Ridgewood Avenue close to Mason Avenue. The bulk of the immediate area is given over to businesses, however, there are a few single-family homes intermingled within them.
Living here puts you with driving distance of places to go shopping, including pet supply stores and the Volusia Mall. For those of you who like to eat out, there are many fabulous places to eat within a short drive such as Caribbean Jack's, the Chart House, Anna's Trattoria Italian, and more. If you like the nightlife, just across the bridge on the beachside, there are numerous clubs like Razzle's, the Ocean Deck, and the Mai Tai Bar where you can dance the night away. With summer evenings in the 70s and a mild breeze coming in off the ocean, nothing could be more fun than dancing on a beachfront deck to your favorite music.
The flat terrain around Rawlings Ridgewood Park is a densely packed blend of businesses and homes. Most of the streets here offer sidewalks to walk on and there is one small park within walking distance.
While flat ground may not be much of a challenge for a very active and fit dog, it can be perfect for a puppy, an older dog, or one that has managed to pack on a few extra pounds. With this type of terrain to cover, you get to choose how far you go each day.
It's okay to start with short walks at first to get everyone used to walking on the pavement. Once both of you are comfortable with the walks, you can take off exploring the various blocks around you. Just remember how hot the pavement can become on summer days and try to take your walks during the early morning hours before everything starts to heat up.
Living in such a built-up area leaves you without much in the way of green space to enjoy. The only park close by is Sunnyland Park which offers a baseball field, a playground, and plenty of room to run around. Just be sure to keep your pooch on a leash as the area isn't fully secured by fencing. Bags to clean up after your dog will also come in handy.
If you prefer a fenced-in dog park, the nearest one is the Community Dog Park at the Halifax Humane Society. This is an exceptionally well-kept dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs. Each section has agility obstacles for you and your pup to work on together and watering stations to help keep them hydrated. The park also has plenty of shady seating for you to relax on while Fido runs off to play with their buddies.
