If you are looking for a park to take Fido out for some play time in, you should plan to drive for a bit. While you may not be right on the beach, you can still enjoy the 90-degree summers with endless blue skies and sunshine. Don't forget that the winters here are beautiful as well! The only month it gets cold is in January when you might wake up to a little frost on your windshield from time to time.
The terrain in Westwood Heights is flat followed by more of the same with lots of sidewalks and residential blocks for you to plan your walks around. The idea is to make the most of them by creating walking routes that will take you around different blocks. The more variety you can build into your walks, the better they will be! Your dog uses their super sensitive nose to explore their surroundings in the same way we use our eyes. The more variety you can build into your daily walks, the more your pup is likely to want to go out for them!
One thing you should keep in mind is that during the months when the temperatures are above 80 degrees, the temperature of the pavement is likely to be too hot for your pooch to walk on. Exercise caution, especially when considering the heat that is common in this part of Florida.
While there are large areas of green space on the other side of Beville Road, these are private property and not somewhere you can take your pup out for walks. The nearest large area of green space is the Tiger Bay Wildlife Management Area to the west on US 92.
The WMA offers you and Fido more than 30,000 acres to wander around on. The WMA is a blend of old growth and new, thanks to the wildfires that ran through the area in the summer firestorms of 1998, claiming over 15,000 acres in damages and destruction. The WMA contains miles of trails for you and your pooch to explore. Just keep in mind that you and your four-legged friend will be sharing the trails with cyclists and horseback riders, but there is plenty of space for everyone. Be sure you pack lots of water to stay hydrated, especially during the summer months.
