Mariners Gate is a modest neighborhood of single-family homes just off US-1 and close to West Indian River Boulevard. The houses here are upscale and most of them have swimming pools in their backyards. There is a lake with fountains in the middle of the community. This is a relatively new development, which means there are plenty of sidewalks for you and your pup to make use of for your daily walks.

The good news is that there is a Winn-Dixie a fifteen-minute walk north of your home. Here, you can stock your fridge and pantry. The store also carries a large selection of pet supplies, including food and treats for your pooch. Edgewater Plaza sits between this area and US-1, and this small strip mall is home to Peggy's Country Kitchen, a chain restaurant that is very popular with the locals. The food is excellent, the coffee even better, and the service is exquisite!

Inside Mariners Gate, the main road loops around the community with Central Mariners Drive cutting through the middle. Both roads and Falcon Avenue that leads to the houses have sidewalks for you and your pooch to walk on. This is a working family neighborhood with plenty of traffic during the morning and evening rush hours.

During the day, you are likely to come across any number of kids playing in their yards, on the sidewalks, or in the streets. The only problem they present is the overwhelming desire to run up and pet your pup. Providing you are okay with this and your dog is well-socialized, this is an excellent opportunity for everyone. It gives you a chance to teach kids how to approach your dog safely. With the flat terrain, you can expect to see quite a few pedestrians in the area. Keep this in mind when walking with a particularly sensitive or nervous pooch.

While there aren't any parks within walking distance, there are plenty of places within driving distance. One of the more popular places to go walking with the family dog is over on the beachside at the tip of the peninsula.

Smyrna Dunes Park is one of the few beach areas nearby that allow dogs on the coast. The park covers 73 acres and includes five different ecosystems. There is an elevated boardwalk that takes you over the most sensitive areas and to the beach itself. It should only take you fifteen minutes to drive here, but you'll find it well worth the effort.

To the southwest is the Turnbull Hammock Conservation Area, covering over 1,100 acres that provide a habitat for a wide range of animals and birds. While there is very little in the way of access, you and your pup should be able to find a few trails running through the area that are worth exploring.
