Wag! Walkers know Central Flagler Beach

Central Flagler Beach is a mixed community of older homes, newer homes on the saltwater canals, and business that line the A1A. Living in the center of town offers you walking access to great restaurants, eclectic shops, and the Flagler Beach Pier where you can fish to your heart's content. Along with all of this, you get six miles of fantastic ocean views and free access to the beaches. There are several dog-friendly parks in the area and a pet supply store out by the Flagler County Airport. There is also an animal hospital just down the road. The majority of Central Flagler Beach is located across the Intercoastal Waterway.

Like most of Central Florida, winter lows are in the 40s and summer highs are in the mid-90s. If you plan to walk your pup during the summer months, be sure to do so early in the morning when the pavement has had a chance to cool off.

What is the terrain like in Central Flagler Beach?

Central Flagler Beach is a blend of business and residential areas. A large percentage of the homes sit on saltwater canals that lead into the Matanzas River. From here, you can head up to St. Augustine and go out into the Atlantic Ocean via the Matanzas Inlet.

The ground itself is flat and the homes sit on decent-sized yards. You and your pup will have to get used to walking on pavement as there are no sidewalks in the housing areas for you. Keep in mind that during the summer months, the pavement temperatures can reach over 135°F. At these temperatures, the pads on your dog's paws can be severely burned in seconds.

The one thing you do have going for you and your pup is the Betty Steflik Memorial Preserve on the south side of SR 100. It offers trails with varying terrain for two of you to explore.

How many greenways are there in Central Flagler Beach?

Living between the ocean and the Matanzas River in Central Flagler Beach brings with it access to several different parks and wetland areas. Some like Veteran's Park offer a flat area of grass for you and your dog to romp around on while others like the Betty Steflik Memorial Preserve have more to offer. The preserve covers 217 acres and has boardwalk trails that take you all through the coastal scrub and saltwater marshes. Along the way, you might want to catch fish from the pier or have a picnic at the Picnic Pavilion.

If you're searching for a place to let your pup run free, Wadsworth Park is just across the waterway along SR100. There are several different sports courts and a fenced-in off-leash dog park where your doggy can run around and have fun making new friends and meeting old ones. The park also offers a nature trail that winds through the mangroves.
