Mitchell Lake Estates is a modestly sized community in the city of Opa Locka, consisting of medium-sized, single-family homes, apartment buildings, and a few high-rise apartment complexes. Many of the homes here were built from 1940 to 1969 with a few more being added through 1999. Most of the streets here do not have sidewalks for you and Louie to take your daily walks on, but as long as you walk against the traffic and wear light-colored or reflective clothing, you should be safe.

If you are looking for dog-friendly parks and pet supply stores, you will have to go for a drive. The same applies to restaurants as they are available, but unless you live on the outer edges of the community, you have to drive to them. Many people move to Miami for the weather. With balmy temperatures in the 60s in the winter and a glorious 85-90 in the summer months, it just doesn't get any better!

The terrain in Mitchell Lake Estates is what you might expect in any area of a Greater Miami neighborhood: flat with a side dish of flatter. To the east of the community, there are no less than three cemeteries, but they really aren't for you and Louie to walk in. Beyond this, you are going to have to be satisfied with trying to find new ways to take the boredom out of your daily walks. You can try going different directions, add more blocks, take a break and go for two or three short walks, or take a hike along the waterfront at the Jeb Estates Park along the western side of town.

One word of advice: during the summer months, you should keep your walk times to early in the morning. If you wait until noon or later, the pavement will be hot enough to seriously burn Louie's paws severely enough to cause some real discomfort and pain.

Greenways in Mitchell Lake Estates is limited to large backyards, one park, and the three cemeteries next door. The Jeb Estates Park is, for the most part, a large triangular area of grass that is perfect for you and Louie to play on. But once you are at the park, you can take the trail that runs along the shores of the small lake the community sits on.

Alternatively, you can take a short drive over to Ingram Park. Here, you will find wide open areas of grass, trails that run around the park, and a trail leading out onto a spit of land sticking out into the lake. The park also offers tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and tennis courts.

Below NW 135th St. is Ben Franklin Park which is not much more than a wide area of grass with a path going all the way around it. It does, however, give you somewhere different to explore.
