South Miami sits on the border of the main campus of the University of Miami and offers residents shady neighborhoods, plenty of parks, and a downtown area lined with historic buildings, eclectic shops, and a selection of exceptional restaurants to try out. The city center has long been a trendy area for shopping, entertainment, and dining, bustling with college students, young professionals, and their families. There is a range of single and multi-family housing with a distinct lack of sidewalks. The residential areas of town are both family and dog-friendly with large yards and numerous parks of varying sizes scattered throughout.

The climate here is superb with January being the coldest month in the 60s. Summers here are glorious with highs in the upper 80s to the low 90s. While it does rain up to 60 inches per year here, there are very few days you can't go walking with your pup.

Speaking of going for walks with your pooch, the land in the South Miami area is like the rest of the city in that it is relatively flat here. While there are some areas with sidewalks, not all blocks have them, so due care should be exercised when going for a walk. Wear light-colored clothing to help motorists spot you and, when there are no sidewalks, be sure to walk against traffic to further aid you in being seen.

The good news is that those shade trees help keep the paved surfaces a little cooler during the hottest part of the day. Keep in mind that during the hottest part of summer, the paved surfaces can be hot enough to burn paw pads and cause severe damage. You can keep your walks simple by picking different routes each day to make them a little more exciting for both of you.

South Miami has multiple parks scattered throughout the community for you and your pooch to enjoy. Marshall Williamson Park is a small park under the trees with paved pathways and plenty of grass to run around on. At only 1.4 acres, the park offers lots of shade, rock seating, and lots of open grass.

At 8.57 acres, Palmer Park is the largest park in the neighborhood and features a multipurpose field, five baseball/softball fields, restrooms, parking, batting cages, and concessions. The big attraction is the vast multipurpose field that offers plenty of room for you to play fetch on and generally get in plenty of good healthy exercise.

Along with the small parks within the community, there are several others within driving distance including the AD (Doug) Barnes Park and Tropical Park with its long trails to explore together. With these options of varied sizes located nearby, there are plenty of places to go with your pooch.
