Hammock Gardens is a small neighborhood of larger homes buried in the woods of SR-44 directly across from the local Ford dealership. While this could be a nice quiet place to live, you are right alongside a very busy highway, so it can be a bit on the noisy side at certain times of day. Like many of the nearby neighborhoods, there are plenty of shade trees among the houses and in the undeveloped areas.

Living here puts you very close to a number of fast-food and individually owned restaurants, an urgent care center, and a pet supply shop. There is a grocery store on SR-44 along with several other stores.

The center of town is only ten minutes away, the beach is only fifteen minutes away, and the massive Tiger Bay State Forest is only fifteen minutes to the west. No matter how you look at it, you and your dog can find plenty of trails or places to hike.

Living alongside SR-44 means living next to a bustling highway which may not be the best place to take your pup for walks if they don't like loud noises. However, there is a wide sidewalk running along the south side of the highway with wide berms for the two of you to walk along. Along with this, there are crosswalks you can use to walk over to a few nearby shops.

To the south, the areas are all residential with the only real traffic occuring during the morning and evening rush hours. Beyond this, the two of you will have the roads mostly to yourself. You may see some pedestrian traffic during the times when school buses are picking up in the morning and dropping off in the afternoon. If you happen to be walking your pup during these times, you should keep your dog on a tight leash for their safety and that of the kids as well.

Beyond being surrounded by woods, there are two large wooded parks on the other side of SR-44 for you and your dog to hike in. Otter Park South and Otter Park North are heavily wooded and have numerous trails including the New Smyrna Beach Multi-Use Trail for the two of you to make good use of. The northern half of the park also features a large lake to walk around and explore.

Less than five minutes to the south is the New Smyrna Beach Dog Park. The park offers separate fenced-in areas for large and small breeds. Each section has a watering station for the dogs, plenty of obstacles to play on, and lots of grass.

A little further to the west on SR-44 is the Tiger Bay State Forest and S Tomoka Wildlife Management Area where the two of you can enjoy hiking along many miles of nature trails under the shade of the dense forests.
