Seymour Pickett Grant is a large residential area sandwiched between US-1 and the Indian River North. Homes here range from modest houses all the way up to large luxury homes right on the river. Most of the homes here are older, but the area is relatively well-kept, as is the neighborhood in general. Living here also puts you within walking distance of a strip mall and numerous chain restaurants as well as the New Smyrna 12 AMC theaters.

While there are some advantages to living this close to a strip mall, it does also come with a few problems, including a little more pedestrian traffic and crime than you might expect in other areas of town. Most of the crime is petty, but walking with a friend is recommended at the darker hours. However, the charm of the area still outweighs its negatives and it's still a great place to wander with your pup from time to time.

The area is relatively flat and, for the most part, what you can expect is a residential area and carefully laid out blocks where some of the streets have sidewalks and others don’t. This can make walking your dog a bit more challenging, but as long as you keep an eye on traffic and wear light-colored clothing, the two of you should be able to go for your walks in relative safety.

Keep in mind that the closer you get to the river, the lower the amount of traffic you are likely to encounter. Like most areas of New Smyrna Beach, the traffic in Seymour Pickett Grant tends to be heavier during rush hours. But, if you feel the need to walk closer to US-1, the more vehicular and pedestrian traffic you are likely to encounter.

Most of the streets here, whether they have sidewalks or not, are at least heavily shaded to help keep the sun off your shoulders.

There are several small parks in the area, but most are barely big enough for your dog to find a place to use the bathroom. However, you can both be on the beach in less than ten minutes! The area offers you miles of sand to walk in, surf to play in, and, the waves to go swimming in. The best time of day to go is in the early morning before it gets too hot or the beach fills up with other beachgoers.

To the north is the Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve. This nature preserve covers over 1,600 acres of swamps and forest. The preserve also includes miles of trails that you and your dog can use for your daily hikes. They will take you through different parts of the park and past a 15-foot tall observation tower. You'll head all the way to Rose Bay if you and your dog are up to the 6-mile round trip.
