Wag! Walkers know Silver Sands

Silvers Sands is a large residential community sitting between the Mosquito Lagoon Aquatic Preserve and the Atlantic Ocean. Housing varies with mostly condos and hotels on the beach and a wide range of residential housing on the lagoon side. Being a little south of the central part of town helps reduce the amount of traffic you and your dog will have to deal with when you are out on your walks.

Hopefully, you don't mind driving a little bit north for amenities such as restaurants, grocery stores, and those all-important pet supply stores.

One of the best things about living in the New Smyrna Beach area has to be the winters. With temperatures in the 60s and 70s and only a few days of rain, you and your dog will be able to go for walks every day. The worst thing you might need is a raincoat and an umbrella.

What is the terrain like in Silver Sands?

With A1A splitting the Silver Sands community virtually in half, the main roads can be bustling, especially during rush hours and during the peak of tourist season. If you must walk down the main drag, be sure you keep your dog on a short leash as there is usually a fair amount of pedestrian traffic to deal with as well.

The one thing missing from the residential areas seems to be sidewalks. While traffic within these areas tends to be less than on A1A, you still need to be careful and pay close attention to everything going on around you.

You can also take your dog for walks on the beach. The best time to do so is in the mornings before the sun starts to set the world on fire. This is also the time of day when fewer cars and people are on the beach, giving you and your dog more room to walk, jog, or run.

How many greenways are there in Silver Sands?

Within the bounds of the livable area of Silver Sands, you aren't going to find much in the way of usable green space that isn't on private property. But what you will see is that you are on the doorstep of the Mosquito Lagoon Aquatic Preserve. Drop a canoe in the water, have your dog hop in, and enjoy the miles of waterways contained in the preserve.

While you are in there, be sure you keep an eye out for the dolphin pod that has chosen to call the preserve their permanent home. The area links up with the Indian River North and goes for miles to the south.

There are areas of dry land within the lagoon, but the local flora and fauna grow so high that you may be unable to see where you are. Once you get to know your way around, you may even find places where you and your dog can get out of the canoe and play.
