Turnbull Shores is a large, mostly residential area of New Smyrna Beach along the shore of Turnbull Bay. Most of the homes here are more upscale with large shady yards. The community sits right next door to the New Smyrna Beach airport and within a ten-minute drive to the coast itself. Living on the water and alongside the Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve helps keep the cool breezes flowing during the hot Florida summer days. At the same time, it unfortunately mean living with mosquitos all year round.

As a relatively new community, the area is very well kept and there is very little crime for you to have to worry about when taking your dog for their walks. Unlike many areas of the country where you can't swim in the waters, the waters of Turnbull Bay and the Indian River are considered clean and safe for you or your dog to play in.

Turnbull Shores is made up of primarily single-family homes with one hotel, an arts center, and a few other small businesses. Whether or not you and your dog will have sidewalks to use or have to walk on the street will depend on where you live. Thankfully, traffic here is limited to those who live in the area and the only time it gets really busy is during rush hour in the morning or evening.

Most of the streets here also lack shade trees to help keep you and your dog shaded while you are out for your walks. The terrain itself is quite flat and has little to offer in the way of challenge, but you can replace hills with distance. With the temperatures in the 90s during the summer months, you should try to take your walks in the early morning before the sun has had time to heat everything up.

Turnbull Shores is surrounded by green spaces. Once you go outside of the community, there is so much more for you and your dog to explore. The Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve spans over 1,600 acres and offers miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. There is an observation tower, a canoe launch, and plenty of wildlife to look for on your hikes.

The Mosquito Lagoon Aquatic Preserve has a lot to offer. It is home to a number of Florida manatees and has its own family of dolphins who are quite likely to pop up next to you and your dog as you paddle around.

Then, of course, there is the beach with miles of sand to walk along and fresh ocean breezes that help take the heat of a summer day away. The best time of day to go walking on the sand is early in the morning when there are fewer people and the temperatures are more comfortable.
