Portona is one of the older sections of Port Orange and is a residential area of older homes. The neighborhood is clean and relatively well-kept with a large wooded buffer between it and Sugar Mill Elementary School. Like many other older residential areas of Florida, sidewalks were not part of the building plan. To find restaurants, dog-friendly parks, and pet supply stores, you may have to drive for more than a few blocks. The good news is that you are only a short drive from the Dunlawton Ave. bridge over to the beachside where you and your pup can find space to run around in the surf and sand.

With an average of 227 days of sunshine and winter temperatures in the high 40s, there aren't many days when you can't go for a walk with your dog. However, you might want to carry an umbrella as the thunderstorms come in quickly and dump a lot of water!

The terrain in Portona is relatively flat, and a pleasant blend of artificial and natural scenery with tree-lined streets and vast expanses of woods separating the neighborhood from the nearby school. You'll also find the FEC tracks running along the eastern side.

While flat ground may not be the best thing to challenge your pup, it can be the perfect place to exercise your dog if they are older or a little on the chubby side. You can start off by walking around the block you live on and then work your way up to adding more blocks into your walks. This will help to prepare you for taking hikes along the many trails in the nearby S. Tomoka Wildlife Management Area and Tiger Bay State Forest. Or you can head over to the Dunlawton Ave. bridge and make use of the loose sand to get your exercise in for the day.

Start with the vast expanse of woods directly to the west of the community and the tree-lined streets and move out to the several nearby parks! There are plenty of greenways for you and your pooch to run around exploring.

To the north in South Daytona is Reed Canal Park with picnic facilities, a disc golf course, and walking trails made of shell for the two of you to walk on. There is also a lake in the park used for fishing and the local model sailboat club.

For something a bit more challenging, you can hop in the car and head west to Tiger Bay State Park and the South Tomoka Wildlife Management Area where you and your dog will find miles of trails wandering through the dense forests. Be sure you prepare for your foray into the woods by covering yourself in insect repellent or you may find yourself being eaten alive!
