Downtown Tampa is bordered by water on three sides with the Hillsborough River on the west side, the Ybor Channel on the east side, the Garrison Channel on the south, and Interstate 275 on the north. An expressway runs diagonally through the neighborhood and is elevated so it does not impede pedestrians who can cross on the streets that run under it.

This is a developed urban neighborhood with high rise and multi-story buildings that shade streetscapes. Beautiful trees are planted along the city streets, adding greenery to this urban center. Traffic, noise, and activity are plentiful in the area and dogs should be accustomed to the activity to be comfortable walking nearby.

Sidewalks run along city streets and are often brick surfaced with crosswalks at intersections that distinguish pedestrian paths from asphalt streets. The topography of the region is level and there are no steep hills to climb while walking the area with your dog.

The Downtown Tampa Region is home to two off-leash dog parks. The Curtis Hixon Waterfront Dog Park is an enclosed space in the Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park with an artificial grass surface. Dogs can enjoy the agility equipment, obstacles, and there is drinking water for thirsty pups.

The Deputy Kotila Memorial Dog Park is uniquely situated under the expressway on the northeast side of downtown. This off-leash dog park is fenced with separate areas for large and small dogs. The park has an artificial turf surface, water fountains with built in pet bowls, seating for dog owners, and the location under the expressway provides shade to the park.

The Tampa Riverwalk is a 2.4-acre paved trail on the west side of downtown along the Hillsborough River. This walking trail connects several parks and attractions and you can walk with your dog leashed, however, watch out for joggers, commuters, cyclists, and skaters also using the riverwalk.
