Ben Hill is a neighborhood located in Southwest Atlanta, Georgia. There are plenty of parks, natural spaces, quiet residential roads, and schools for dog walkers to enjoy. Space between residential areas and commercial areas impedes the walkability of the area somewhat.

The weather, however, makes walking possible on most days with warm temperatures and mild winters. Summer days can be extremely hot and humid and dog walkers may want to avoid taking their pups out during the height of the day. Make sure you and your dog are well hydrated and sheltered from the sun and avoid overexertion. Fall is usually ideal for walking and winter temperatures are generally well above freezing and pleasant. When going out on a long walk, be aware of local imminent weather such as thunderstorms and conditions that would make a tornado possible. Severe storms with high winds are dangerous for on foot travel.

The Ben Hill area is defined as being north of Welcome All Road, South of Fairburn, east of Campbellton Road, and west of Hogan Road. There are lots of undeveloped areas in the region with lakes, creeks, and forested areas along ravines and between residential sections.

Homes in the area are well maintained with a variety of architectural styles. Properties are well landscaped with lawns, trees, and shrubs, and bordered by natural trees. Most of the residential homes are single-family, although there are some apartment complexes in the area.

Some of the terrain in the district is hilly.  Most inclines are not steep and do not impede on foot travel, however, even a gentle hill can become strenuous when extreme heat is occurring, so be sure to adapt your walks according to your abilities. Many areas do not have separate sidewalks for pedestrians and you and your furry friend will need to share roadways with local traffic.

The Ben Hill area has well spread out residential spaces with lots of natural areas in between. These natural wooded areas and associated creeks and ravines have many natural dirt trails which make great walking spots. Unmaintained trails, however, can have hazards and local wildlife can be distracting. Keep your dog on a leash so your pup does not take off after local critters.

The Ben Hill Community Park is located in the area and has more maintained pedestrian paths and recreation facilities. There is a recreation center here, three ball fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts in this park for area residents to use.

Melvin Drive Park is located farther to the north and provides 48.9 acres with sports fields and facilities as well as picnic sites to enjoy. The park is heavily treed and there is lots of shade on hot summer days to provide shelter from the sun.
