Brookwood is located in north Atlanta on the southern end of Buckhead. The neighborhood is distinct from Brookwood Hills which, although it has a similar name, is a separate area located to the east. The Brookwood area has many shops, restaurants, and services located along Peachtree Street NW on the east side of the neighborhood and is easily walkable.

Atlanta features walkable weather most of the year with sunny, temperate conditions much of the time. Occasional showers occur and these are more frequent in winter when the temperatures are also cooler. Below freezing weather and snow are uncommon, although it does occasionally occur, making footing treacherous. A warm, waterproof jacket and footwear with good traction are assets for dog walkers who enjoy winter walks in Atlanta.

Summer days can be exceptionally hot and humid and pet owners should avoid extreme heat when taking their dogs out for daily constitutionals by choosing cooler times of the day or shady walkways.

Brookwood is bordered by Interstate 75 on the southwest and Interstate 85 on the southeast. These busy freeways and interchanges are not pedestrian-friendly as they have high-speed traffic, limited pedestrian crossings, and noise. Avoid busy freeways when walking with your dog.

The terrain in the area has some hills, although they are not very steep and usually do not present a barrier for most dog walkers and their pups. There are creeks with ravines and natural areas along the border and meandering through the neighborhood. The neighborhood also has large apartment and condominium complexes with large properties and some private sports facilities on grounds.

Single-family homes are also present in the area and many are unique character homes with attractive yards and gardens, well appointed, and with large shade trees on properties. Trees are prevalent throughout the area along the beltline rail corridor and in the adjacent natural areas.

The Tanyard Creek Trail reaches the west end of Brookwood. Following this trail will take you north to the Tanyard Creek Park,  a 14.5-acre park and nature preserve. This heavily treed greenway is perfect for hot summer days with plenty of mature shade trees. The greenway is also home to local urban flora and fauna. Keep your dog leashed on the trail to be respectful to other users. The Tanyard Creek green space also has two designated off-leash areas. Make sure your dog has good off-leash recall, is well socialized, vaccinated, and licensed to use the area.

A short walk south takes Brookwood locals to the Loring Heights Park, a 1.9-acre park with a duck pond, plenty of places to sit and rest at benches and a picnic site, and even porch-type swings. The park is well treed with plenty of wooded areas and a walking trail around the pond which is ideal for local dog walkers.
