Highland Hills is a great little neighborhood located on the southern edge of downtown Dallas. Although this area is technically still downtown, it is in the least populated region and really resembles a suburb more than a downtown. This is especially true when you factor in the high number of schools in the area. With that and the parks, this is clearly a more kid-friendly area than the traditional downtown. This is great for walkers who like being close to downtown but want a less bustling area to come home to and walk their dog in.

However, the downside of the area being so much lower in population is a significant decrease in local business options, including pet services. This can be very frustrating for residents who have to drive into the inner city to take care of their pet's needs. However, Uptown Dog Grooming is a great local option that may lighten the load a bit.

This neighborhood is very similar to most of the neighborhoods in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. This is partially due to the very flat topography of the neighborhood, as well as the high levels of artificiality. However, there are two features of this area that add some unique qualities. First, the high number of waterways flowing through the area adds not only a source of cool water, but also brings with them several water-based activities such as fishing. They are also usually a great natural path to follow for your daily dog walks.

The second feature that adds some color to the area is the local Joppa Preserve. This large green space puts neighborhood parks to shame with lakes and beautiful scenery. With all of these great additions, the daily walking possibilities are really endless around here. A great way to get kids involved is by walking your pup to the school drop off with them.

Although this area is much more suburban than the traditional downtown Dallas neighborhood, there are still, unfortunately, not very many options when it comes to greenways. Although there are some great parks and waterways, such as the ones found at the Joppa Preserve, there is still much to be desired in the way of local neighborhood parks. This is both unusual and unfortunate for the area because, usually, Dallas suburbs, especially those with several schools, have several neighborhood park options. Arguably, this is the most kid-friendly setup and makes it very easy for parents to get the whole family out and active, so in an area so populated with schools, it is a really wasted opportunity.

Fortunately, there are some options that hold the area together and give residents some variety. Some of the best parks in the area include Veterans Park, the Singing Hills Recreation Center, and Highland Hills Park.
