The Cabrini Green area of Chicago, Illinois was once home to the now infamous Cabrini-Green Projects: towering apartment buildings that even Chicago Mayor Jayne Byrne could only stay in for 25 days, even after her promise to remain until something was done. In 2011 the last of these buildings were demolished, making a way to clean up the community and make it safer for all.

Today, the area has undergone significant changes and offers plenty of room to take your dog for a walk. While still obviously an older part of the city, there are several green spaces, including parks that are dog-friendly, to take your pup out for playtime. Like most of the Chicago area, spring, summer, and fall offer ideal weather to go for walks in, but the winters here tend to be extremely cold, windy, and full of snow which means walking may not be an option during the coldest months.

The terrain in Cabrini Green is much like your cast iron skillet: perfectly flat with the streets laid out symmetrically in most of the residential area. Although this type of terrain might not give you the best workout, you can at least get in a few laps and change directions to keep things at least a little bit on the exciting side. With the projects gone, the size of the community has dropped but is expected to recover as new homes are built. There are plenty of sidewalks for you and your pup and most have grass between the sidewalk and street for your dog to do his business on as well as lots of abandoned lots that have been turned into green fields. In the northern half of Cabrini Green, many of the streets are heavily shaded and lined with trees, providing for a nice refreshing walk during the heat of summer.

If there is one thing Cabrini Green is not short of, it has to be greener areas. Some like Seward Park and Park No.56 are there for everyone to have fun, including your family dog. Others like the many vacant lots that have turned into lush green fields may be an excellent place to play as well. Keep in mind your dog should always be on a leash and you should always keep a close eye on the ground for things you wouldn't want your pup to step on.

Although there aren't any dog parks in the Cabrini Green area, there are a couple of them just south of W. Chicago Ave., both of which offer a great place to let your pup run off-leash and make new friends or catch up with some old ones. The area has plenty of places to take your puppy for a walk and dog parks within driving distance.
