Eden Green is a small neighborhood that was constructed in the 1960s and was one of the first developments that were owned and operated by African Americans. It lies on the southeast side of Chicago and is part of the Riverdale community area. Eden Green is bordered by the Little Calumet River on one side and S. Indiana Ave. on another.

This neighborhood is entirely residential, but across the bridge of S. Indiana Ave., you can find some small restaurants and other businesses. There are not many amenities for your dog within walking or biking distance, but you can drive north to R. Lewis Dog Training Center or Sit Means Sit South Chicagoland if your dog is in need of training. A little further West, Sandi’s Dog Grooming and Beverly’s Dog Grooming Salon can take care of your dog’s beauty needs. In addition, there are lovely forested areas just a few miles down the Little Calumet River in both directions.

Eden Green is divided into roughly three sections. Concordia Place Apartments is mostly treeless and grassy, offering pleasant walking paths through the central courtyard.

Riverside Village has more tree cover and less green space, as well as fewer walking trails away from the road. The final section of the neighborhood is not planned apartments, but rather attractive homes on large lots. Yards tend to be fenced but there is still plenty of room to walk your dog on a loose leash on the wide sidewalks.

Traffic is not very busy and mature tree cover makes this a lovely walk with your dog. If you are careful and aware of where you are, you can bike or walk with your dog on a loose leash throughout most of this neighborhood. For a change, you can head west or east to the Whistler Woods Forest Preserve or the Beaubien Forest Preserve. Both provide challenging forested terrain to test your dog’s footing.

There are lovely parks in both directions from Eden Green on the Little Calumet River and more natural areas north to Lake Calumet as well. The Whistler Woods Forest Preserve has thick, lush forest with well-maintained trails cutting through. A large grassy area in the center is the perfect place to get some sun on chilly and windy Chicago days.

The park borders the river for a natural shoreline to explore. In the other direction, the Beaubien Forest Preserve has thick forest as well and also has a natural shoreline along the river. This park also has a charming little lake called Flatfoot Lake with a path around it. A small, cleared area by the lake is the perfect place to introduce your dog to the water.

The forest continues on the other side of the Little Calumet River to the John W. Needles Park where you can enjoy forest and grassland with your pup at your side.
