Forest Glen is a neighborhood in the furthest northwest corner of Chicago. It holds three smaller neighborhoods within it including Wildwood, Edgebrook, and Sauganash. The whole area has a definite suburban feel to it and it is enclosed in beautiful forests and greenery on multiple sides. It is mostly residential and its streets are lined with architecture that is described as 'eclectic Midwestern,' ranging from bungalows to row houses. The picturesque quality of the suburban landscape, combined with a vast array of greenways, makes it an ideal place for walking alongside your pup.

Chicago is known as the 'windy city' because of the harsh winds that come off of Lake Michigan in the winter, so make sure to keep your dog warm if you are walking during a colder time of year. The summers, however, are beautiful and will provide you with many opportunities for good dog walking. Just be cautious about sensitive paws on hot pavement.

The terrain in Forest Glen is similarly flat and mild like the majority of the Chicago area. There are hardly any hills, inclines, or drastic changes in elevation in the streets of the neighborhood. In the greenways behind the residential section of the neighborhood, especially Edgebrook golf course and other areas, there are some small hills and inclines.

The residential section of the neighborhood is full of streets lined with a high volume of trees, making Forest Glen one of the least artificial places in the greater Chicago area. Traffic shouldn’t ever be of great concern, except for the rush hour times when schools are letting out and parents are coming home from work. Unlike some parts of the city that can get crowded and congested, Forest Glen is actually a fairly serene environment with a comfortable level of foot traffic, so it is great for dogs with all different kinds of personalities.

There are an extraordinary amount of greenways and parks along the western side of the Forest Glen area, including Sidney Yates Flatwoods, Forest Glen Woods, Lechowicz Woods, and Edgebrook Woods. The forests and parks span for over a mile and the north branch of the Chicago River runs through all of them. The Forest Glen Woods include the Forest Glen Forest Preserve which is a home to all kinds of natural wildlife. The preserve was restored to proper health by a volunteer group in the past and it is now one of the most beautiful places to visit in Forest Glen area.

Other greenways lay directly adjacent to the Forest Glen neighborhood, including La Baugh Woods, Bunker Hill, and the Forest Preserves of Cook County. When it comes to dog walking, or even just exploring the outdoors, Forest Glen is one of the most coveted areas within Chicago’s city limits.
