When you think about the growth, prosperity, and history of Chicago, you inherently think of the Gold Coast. This coast-lined neighborhood, once a fire victim and once swampland, was renovated into a neighborhood coveted by the rich and famous. Most of this was thanks to businessman and tycoon, Potter Palmer, who was one of the first to invest in the Gold Coast neighborhood by building an estimated 10,000 square foot mansion.

Today, the history and legacy of Gold Coast live on, but much of the area has also been revamped. While the neighborhood remains one of the most affluent in Chicago - as well as in the Nation - it is home to more than just residential Greystone mansions from the 19th and early 20th centuries. It also is now complete with boutique hotels, modern, trendy high-rise condominiums, upscale boutiques, art and history museums, an award-winning fine dining scene, and a whole street dedicated to nightlife.

A lot of the footage Gold Coast rests upon was once a swampy mess no one would have ventured to develop upon. Early settlers packed in the area, leveling its surface and making it ideal for both commercial and residential development. While Lakeshore Drive can be raucous, Lakefront Trail gives Chicago residents and visitors a place to bike, hike, run, and walk without worrying about vehicle traffic, all while enjoying the cool breeze coming off of the blue waters of Lake Michigan.

Another great promenade for you and your pup within the Gold Coast neighborhood is Astor Street which runs north and south through a mostly residential area and is well known for its concentration of historical architectural wonders.

When you and your pooch tire of surveying the exteriors of antiquated homes, there are a number of wonderful parks in the Gold Coast area for you to explore and get your fill of greenery.

Mariano Park is more of a plaza on the petite side. A combination of brick, cafe style seating, a small coffee shop, manicured flower beds, and a water fountain give Mariano a very European feel. This little slice of a park is the perfect place to witness the pulse of Gold Coast as it rests in between State and Rush streets.

If you happen to have both child and pet in tow, head to Goudy Square Playlot Park. Your companions, both two-legged and four-pawed, will enjoy the well-maintained park that's a local family favorite. The park is shaded by mature trees and even gated.

Located right off of the Lakefront Trail, the Chess Pavilion is a concrete pavilion with multiple seating options and built-in chess boards for those young and old to enjoy. Dog-owners rejoice in a space that's great for both sitting and people watching as well as walking or running with your pup!
