Kelvyn Park is a residential area surrounded by busy avenues with commercial activity and a large mall located centrally in the neighborhood. The broader community area of Hermosa, containing Kelvyn Park, is situated on the northwest side of Chicago, Illinois, and is situated well inland from the lake. Residents that enjoy hiking with their hounds in this neighborhood can easily access shops, restaurants, and other services in the shopping area located in the middle of the community. There is also a park, recreation area, and a high school of the same name in the community within walking distance of most residents in the community.
The weather in Chicago can be intemperate in winter, with cold, wet, and windy weather that hampers walking. Temperatures in winter are not moderated and can become frigid. If you like to go out with your dog all year, you and your pup may require warm outerwear for winter walking.
Kelvyn Park is laid out in a grid pattern on flat terrain with sidewalks and grassy verges in most residential areas. The terrain and street layout makes walking with your canine companion in Kelvyn Park easy with no steep climbs or confusing roadways. Kelvyn Park is bordered on three sides by busy commercial areas with lots of traffic and there is a busy street running east-west through the community with a strip mall and parking lot. Traffic in this area can be noisy and presents an issue crossing at busy intersections.
Much of Kelvyn Park, however, is residential, with walk-up apartments and single-family homes and landscaped yards that feature lawns and trees. Some streets are quieter and more pleasant for leisurely strolls. There are train tracks running through the community so be cautious traversing tracks. Kelvyn Park has a couple of greenway boulevards that are more appropriate for walking your dog and much safer!
The eight-acre Kelvyn Park provides recreational facilities to the community including a field house, athletic fields, volleyball and tennis courts, a playground, spray park, and even horseshoe pits. There are two short walking paths that you can enjoy with your pup on a leash to check out the activity. A wide greenway sits on the south side of Kelvyn Park and extends west for four blocks. This greenway has plenty of trees, lawns, and paved pathways and is a great place to stroll or rest in the shade with your furry friend on a hot, humid summer day.
Another greenway located in the neighborhood runs north from Diversity Avenue for several blocks to Belmont Avenue. This greenway has lawns and trees, although no paved trails, and the grassy verge sits between two boulevards. Be sure to keep your dog leashed around traffic even when enjoying the grassy area to keep them safe.
