Parkway Gardens is more of a low-income apartment community. It is part of the Greater Grand Crossing community and sits alongside a large rail yard. Although there are no businesses in the village itself, there are plenty of businesses right across the street. Should your dog become injured or ill, the Woodlawn Animal Hospital is also just across the street. Parkway Gardens has plenty of sidewalks wandering between the buildings that are an excellent place to start walking. But you may soon find yourself crossing S. Martin Luther King Dr. Over on the other side are smaller multifamily homes with lots of sidewalks, shady trees, and of course, small grassy islands for your pup to cool his feet off on and pee if the urge takes him. Unfortunately, the nearest pet supply store is over in Hyde Park, which means you will have to drive there or take a bus.

Since Parkway Gardens is a large low-income apartment housing community, the ground here is entirely predictable. If it wasn't for the grassy areas between the buildings, you might think they poured the entire area in concrete first and then added the grass and buildings. One saving grace is that whoever designed the area added plenty of sidewalks for you to take your pooch out for a walk on. These paths wander through the complex alongside the lawns and parking lots. It's not very exciting as far as hikes go, just somewhere to take your dog for a walk. However, once you cross the street, there are many blocks for you to stroll along, many of which offer shade in the form of old trees, many of which have been alive for decades. Challenge yourself by adding an extra block to your walk every week or two as it will be good for both you and your dog.

While you might not expect a sizeable low-income apartment complex would come up short on green space, there are plenty of small lawns scattered throughout the complex. Be sure to check your lease for information regarding using them to walk your dog. The good news is that just across the street, there are plenty of vacant lots where buildings have been demolished, and the ground is left to return to its natural state. Down on 67th St. sits the Arnita Young Boswell Park which is the perfect place to take your pooch and your family out for some fun in the sun and maybe a picnic lunch. Just northeast of Parkway Gardens is Washington Park covering 367 acres and including a lagoon, three pools, a number of sports fields, and plenty of lovely green spaces where you and your dog can revel in the joys of romping on the grass.
