Vittum Park is a community consisting of single-family homes and attached units. Most are either Cape-Cod or Ranch style homes offering up to seven bedrooms and three bathrooms. These homes date from 1937 all the way up to around 2007. As a community located in southwest Chicago, Vittum Park came about as the aviation industry grew around Midway Airport. Those who live here enjoy long blocks lined with grass and trees and a large community park. For those who might want to grab a bite to eat, there are plenty of Mexican and American restaurants from which to choose. There are also several casual bars scattered throughout the neighborhood.

However, like most of Chicago, spring and fall offer ideal dog walking weather. Summers have hot, humid days and winters offer sub-zero temperatures, lake-effect winds and snows, and icy walking conditions that may not be the best time to go for a walk with your pup.

The terrain in Vittum Park is much like the rest of the city in that the only real slopes are those leading up to the front steps of many of the homes here. All streets feature sidewalks that split front lawns, leaving a small strip of grass for your pup to walk and do their business on. Just remember to clean up after them.

Many of the streets have shady trees along the sidewalks to help provide a little cover for you and your pup during the heat of summer when the sun is beating down. One advantage of flat terrain is that during the winter if you and your pooch decide to brave the cold, you won't have any icy hills to walk up and down. While most residents try to keep the sidewalks clear, you still need to be careful and take your time throughout the neighborhood and remember to be courteous of other pedestrians.

The entire community offers streets with grassy strips for your pup. But beyond a few empty lots, the only real green space for the two of you to enjoy is Vittum Park. This large park is located in the middle of the community, putting it within walking distance of most houses in town. Along with baseball diamonds, tennis courts, and the Edwards Center for Young Learners, the park has vast expanses of grass for you and Rover to romp on. Keep in mind that you must keep your dog on a leash at all times when in public parks. You will need to drive for a few miles to find the Coliseum Park Dog-Friendly area over by the beach. The good news is that you can take your dog into most Chicago parks as long as you keep them on a leash and there are a number of parks within driving distance for you to check out.
