Located centrally in Chicago, West Loop was once an industrial section of the city with factories and warehouses. It has, more recently, become a trendy commercial area with a wide variety of different types and styles of restaurants, bakeries, and cuisine available. Bars, pubs, and clubs in the area provide nightlife along with the many eateries located along 'Restaurant Row'. There are also many unique and upscale retail shops and art galleries all within easy walking distance for West Loop residents who live in converted lofts and apartments in the community. The influx of businesses and development of residential space have contributed to the walkability of West Loop.

The weather in Chicago is not always cooperative. Summer means plenty of sunny days, but also heat and humidity. Winters often bring freezing sub-zero temperatures with snow and spring can be quite rainy and wet. Dress for weather conditions when traveling the West Loop on foot!

The terrain in West Loop is flat and there is a well-developed urban landscape. There is not a lot of green or natural landscaping outside of area parks and elevated train tracks and a major freeway run through this once industrial neighborhood. Most structures are warehouses or industrial buildings, some of which still maintain their original function, and give the neighborhood a 'gritty vibe.' Many of the district's low rise, brick warehouses have been converted to high-end commercial space with restaurants and shops at street level and loft apartments and condominiums on upper floors.

Because there is still a lot of industrial activity in the area, traffic is still prevalent, and dogs should be kept on-leash while walking down busy streets. Noise from local entertainment and nightlife can be a factor and there is a lot of pavement along streetscapes. Dogs that live and walk around this neighborhood will need to adapt to this highly urban environment.

The West Loop is a large area and is home to many parks and greenways.

Mary Bartelme Park with its unique dog-friendly area is a must-see destination for area pet owners. The park is designed with three diagonals intersecting paved paths that create distinct zones in the park.  One area is a fountain plaza while another zone features a children's play area. Your dog’s favorite section will be the sunken dog park, complete with water bowls, agility obstacles, and artificial grass. The D'Angelo Dog Park is also located on the eastern border of the West Loop, and pet owners in that region may find it a convenient off-leash destination.

The Chicago Riverwalk provides a spectacular greenway along the Chicago River with scenery and views of the Chicago skyline and river. Other parks with greenways in the West Loop vicinity include Heritage Green Park, Centre Park, and Pritzker Park.
