Like much of the Chicago area, Oak Park is flat and it is easy to get around with your pooch as there are no steep climbs while walking. The south side of the downtown area has train tracks and should be avoided when walking with your dog. Harlem Avenue borders the area on the west and there is a high school located on the eastern end of the district with spacious grounds and sports fields. Most commercial and residential buildings in the area are low rise and there are many historic buildings in the area including the birthplace of Ernest Hemingway!

Commercial corridors do not have a lot of landscaping, however, residential areas on the north side consist of low rise apartments and condominiums with beautifully landscaped grounds. Buildings have unique architecture specific to the period they were developed in, and along with huge shade trees, the area is beautiful and interesting for walking with your dog.

Austin Gardens is located near the downtown business district, tucked away in the residential district to the north. This woodland oasis has just over three and a half acres of green space.  An environmental education center is located here as well as an outdoor ice rink. Residents can enjoy the park with their dog on a leash.

Scoville Park is home to the Horse Show Fountain, a war memorial, and an open area that hosts outdoor concerts in the summer. There is also a playground and tennis courts located in the park. A paved walking path allows access to the park's natural areas and is a shady greenway on a hot summer day.

Just outside the downtown area to the east is the Ridgeland Common Park which features a pool and recreation center. This landscaped property with pedestrian paths is another greenway destination for area residents with pets to enjoy trees and open lawns in Oak Park.
