Hollygrove is a neighborhood located a 15-minute commute west of the New Orleans central business district. It is part of the Uptown-Carrollton district, located in what is referred to as the city’s 17th Ward. There are many local businesses in the area that can be reached on foot that include convenience stores, grocers, gas stations, a pharmacist, and local eateries. There is also a larger box store in the area that is not as accessible.

Dog walkers in Hollygrove can enjoy walking all year round without having to contend with frigid temperatures. Winters are fairly mild with snow being very uncommon. Summers are hot and humid and during heat waves, you and your dog should choose cooler times of the day to venture out. Seasonal hurricanes or tropical storm systems can occur, especially later in the year. High winds associated with these storms are dangerous for people and pets, and flooding can occur. Seek shelter when these weather systems are present.

Hollygrove sits at an elevation of 0 feet above sea level and the terrain is flat. As such, it can be subject to flooding during severe storms. The level terrain means no steep grades to climb up and down for pedestrians and their pups.

The boundaries of the area vary depending on the source but are generally defined as Palmetto Street to the north, Cambronne Street on the east, Monticello Avenue on the west, and South Claiborne Avenue on the south. The Earhart Boulevard-Expressway runs through the area from east to west.

This is a developed residential neighborhood with single-family and semi-detached homes. Houses are set fairly close to street fronts and to adjacent properties with yards and landscaping to the rear. There are not a lot of large mature trees to provide shade when walking along local roadways. However, there are separate pedestrian sidewalks in the area so you and your pet don’t have to share the road with local traffic.

Lincoln Park and the Cuccia-Byrnes playground are situated on the east side of the neighborhood, providing open green spaces with sports fields and facilities. This park is nearby and convenient for you and your furry friend to visit while strolling the region. Conrad Playground is another neighborhood park located more centrally with similar open areas and trees on the border.

The region has several designated dog parks a short drive away. The nearest is Rio Vista Dog Park which is five minutes by car or 40 minutes on foot. Pontiff Dog Park is located a 15-minute drive to the north and Levee Dog Park is about the same distance to the south. These dog parks are not enclosed, although dogs are welcome to come and socialize in some off-leash areas. Because they are not fenced, you may want to opt to keep your dog leashed to avoid having your pup venture out onto nearby roadways.
