Forest Heights and Oxon Hill are suburban, residential areas located in Prince George County, Maryland. There is a commercial area in the north section of Oxen Hill with a shopping area, restaurants, and motels. Forest Heights residents need to access this area by crossing under a major freeway.  Although residents can reach the commercial area on foot, it is not pedestrian-friendly with sidewalks bordering directly on heavily trafficked, noisy roadways. Locals who enjoy walking their dogs are more likely to stick to residential sections.

The weather in these communities is typical of a subtropical climate. This climate results in hot, humid summers and cool winters. A rain jacket may be required, as this coastal location experiences more than its fair share of rain. Summers tend to be hot and walking at the height of the day on particularly humid days may prove uncomfortable. Early or later in the day may be a better time to walk.

Freeways running through the neighborhood can make traversing the region on foot difficult. If you are walking with your canine companion, plan your route to avoid these heavily trafficked areas. The region is also quite hilly and although slopes are generally gradual, you will need to do some uphill hikes on any long excursions in this region.

Homes in the area tend to be brick, single-family homes with large lawns and are well-landscaped. Homes are elevated on rises above street level and sidewalks and grassy berms separate pathways from streets providing adequate safe walking environments for people and their pups.

Oxon Creek runs along the northwest border of Forest Heights and there is a large natural space northwest of Oxen Hill. The Potomac River lies on the western border of these communities and large natural areas lie along the river near Forest Heights with the National Harbor bordering Oxen Hill on the west side.

The Forest Heights Neighborhood Park sits in the Forest Heights section of the region and contains a basketball court and playground. Open fields and surrounding treed areas can be enjoyed by local and visiting dogs. Bell Acres has more recreational facilities with basketball courts, ball diamonds, and a soccer field. A natural surface trail winds around open areas in the park with picnic sites to enjoy!

The Oxon Hill Creek to the north has a greenway running through the natural area bordering it. The Oxon Hill Farm Trail greenway extends along the creek and connects to other areas. Along the Potomac River, a new and unique park has been created, providing hiking and biking trails around the interstate that connects to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and links to trail systems in both Maryland and Virginia. Crossing the water, pedestrians with their furry friends get a 360-degree view of the river and surrounding area.
