Elmwood Park is a neighborhood of Detroit, Michigan, located just east of the downtown core. Residents of Elmwood Park can reach the many shops, restaurants, and attractions of the central business district in about 30 minutes on foot, including the popular City Bark Pet Supply store. Locals can find shops, restaurants, and services in their own community in minutes along Jefferson Avenue on the south side.
Dog walkers will need some outdoor gear to enjoy a daily walk with their furry friends throughout the year. Winters are cold with some significant snowfall. When severe cold with wind chill occurs, you may want to postpone your outing with your pup in favor of some indoor exercise. Rain jackets and umbrellas should be kept handy as Detroit does get an average amount of rain throughout the year. Summers are warm and usually pleasant for walking, however, occasional heat waves with humid conditions can come through, so keep some water handy!
There are multi-story apartment buildings and low rise apartment and condominium complexes in the area, as well as townhouses. Many properties have communal green spaces. A large cemetery is situated on the northeast side of Elmwood Park and creates a sizable, manicured green space in the community.
The terrain is flat and there are no steep grades to climb up and down, which makes the community easy to get around on foot. Sidewalks on streets in the district create safe, separate pedestrian ways for people and pets, so you don't have to share the road with traffic. The Detroit River waterfront is just a few blocks to the south and is easy to get to.
Elmwood Park has a large neighborhood park of the same name. The Elmwood Central Park is easily accessible on foot and features beautifully maintained open lawns, dotted with large shade trees. Paved walking paths loop through and around the park, making an ideal spot for a stroll with your pooch! Campau Park provides another open green space, across the street from Elmwood Central Park.
Dog walkers can also travel a few blocks to the south to access the Detroit Riverwalk which is part of a longer 3.5 mile, multi-use trail. This trail provides access to several waterfront parks. Keep your dog leashed on the riverwalk and be prepared to clean up any messes they make.
If you are seeking some off-leash fun with your pooch, visit the Grand Circus Dog park about a 40-minute walk west, in the downtown area. This popular dog park has an enclosed area for your pup to play and many events and activities scheduled throughout the year.
