Ferndale is a cute little town located approximately 20 miles north of Detroit. It’s made up of several small neighborhoods, one of which is Fordmount Park. Fordmount Park is around 11 blocks wide and runs from Hilton to Pilgrim and from Woodward Heights Blvd. to Academy St. This area is highly residential and lined mostly with quaint little houses, well-kept lawns, and the occasional corner store or strip center. Within this neighborhood is an elementary school and a large park known as Martin Road. You’ll find about a fifty/fifty split between families with children and married couples young and old here.

The climate gets pretty cold in the winter months, even through the month of March, so make sure you are prepared for cold winds and snow. The rest of the year up until about November, it stays nice. Always check your forecast for rain as each month usually gets about a week’s worth.

Each house in this neighborhood has a beautiful lawn, large shade trees, and a mild amount of landscaping. The sidewalks are very well kept and you can expect to be shaded for the majority of your walk if you stay in residential areas. There are not really hills or even slopes in the neighborhood blocks, making it a physically easy and comfortable place to take a walk. The only sizable hill is in the park and you'll see it coming.

If you have the desire to get out of the neighborhood, a commercial zone starts on just the other side of Hilton but there aren't many public areas with accommodations for dogs. You'll mostly find convenience stores, gas stations, and the like. Enjoy the classy, colorful, and quaint American architecture along your way. Remember to bring doggy bags so you can clean up any front lawns your doggy makes a mess of!

The largest area of this entire neighborhood happens to be a wonderful park: Martin Road Park! This park has a huge expanse of green, shaded seating areas, sports fields, a playground, a lake, and a curling arena. Do take note of signs that restrict dogs from picnic areas in certain times of the day. However, don't let that hold you back from packing a lunch for you both! If you want to venture a few blocks away to another nearby park, Green Acres Park is known for hosting festivals and events. It may be worth a little trot northeast to check it out and see if any fun is going down on their lawns. Keep in mind that there may be large crowds of people and children if so. If you are working with an animal who is easily uncomfortable in those situations, check out what's going on at Green Acres Park before immersing your doggy pal in it.
