South Frogtown is a segment of the Frogtown neighborhood in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The neighborhood is mostly residential, but its main drags have markets, eateries, small businesses, bars, and entertainment for the locals to enjoy. The neighborhood has the largest urban contingent of Vietnamese and Hmong immigrants in America and many of the markets and diners in this region reflect the cultural heritage of the groups who populate most of Frogtown.

Saint Paul and Minneapolis, often referred to as the twin cities, are known for their cold weather and heavy snow during the winter months. Temperatures can often dip below 0 degrees during this frigid season, so be sure to bundle yourself and your dog up if you walk, or to stay inside if the weather is too unforgiving. The summer and spring months in Saint Paul can be beautiful, however, with mild temperatures and lots of sunshine.

The terrain in South Frogtown is extremely flat, meaning you won’t be dealing with any hills or quick shifts in elevation while on a walk. It is a pretty part of town with pleasant middle-class homes lining the sides of the streets in the residential areas and charming small businesses to be found on the main streets.

The borders of South Frogtown are defined by Thomas Avenue to the north, University Avenue to the south, Marion Street to the east, and Dale Street to the west. These roads, especially Thomas and University, have a fair amount of traffic during normal rush hour times because of the neighborhood’s proximity to Saint Paul’s downtown. You can still have a good walk on these roads at any time of day, but if it ever gets too busy for you and your dog, you can duck into the central part of the neighborhood which is more residential and quieter.

Two blocks south of the neighborhood, you will find Central Village Park which has lots of open green space, tennis courts, and playgrounds. It isn’t a very large park, but just a few more blocks to the west is Saint Paul’s Western Sculpture Park. The park features a beautiful exhibit of 15 sculptures with some green space and trails that wind around them.

The largest park in the area is the Scheffer Recreation Center which is located only a couple of blocks northeast of South Frogtown. It has an indoor facility with a game room, gym, and kitchen but its outdoor area is also very large and has a baseball field and football field as well as basketball courts, a playground, and a large amount of open green space.
