Teaneck is a small New Jersey town just east of Hackensack and about a 40-minute drive to New York City, depending on traffic. Teaneck's downtown neighborhood is its main business district and is where you'll find small shops and restaurants as well as well-known chain stores for the amenities that you need. The area offers the charming feel of a small town just outside one of the largest cities in the world.

Your pet will enjoy a stroll down the quiet streets of Downtown Teaneck, especially on a warm, sunny day. The weather in New Jersey changes with the seasons, but the spring and fall months bring cool and pleasant temperatures. Try to head out for your walk in the morning during the summer before the temperature rises and heats up the sidewalks. Always check the forecast year-round, especially in the winter, to avoid heavy snow storms and below-freezing temperatures.

Downtown Teaneck is a very small region of the town and is ideal for people and pets looking for a leisurely stroll with plenty of window shopping. It's a good neighborhood for older dogs who walk slower and tire out quickly as there are plenty of benches and places to stop along the way. While in the downtown area, you'll most likely stick around Cedar Lane where most of Teaneck's restaurants and small shops sit. While most of the area is fairly flat, parts of Cedar Lane have a small incline, but it shouldn't be much trouble.

While the community is a nice place to walk your furry friend, the downtown area can become fairly busy with traffic. Always stay aware of your surroundings and watch your pet, particularly when crossing busy intersections. As long as you're watching out for traffic, you and your pet will have a very enjoyable walk.

Most of Downtown Teaneck consists of streets lined with shops and eateries, but there are several parks and greenways nearby. The closest is Dr. Barnett's Bookstaver Park and the adjacent Sagamore Park. These idyllic places offer plenty of shaded grassy spots. Dr. Barnett's Bookstaver Park resembles a small wooded area with several picnic tables. Just north of there is Milton A. Votee Park, Teaneck's largest recreation area. The park features several athletic fields, sprawling green lawns with winding paths, and a playground. Phelps Park is a smaller park that also offers sports fields, playgrounds, and places to rest.

You can also head west along the Hackensack River to Oscar E. Olsen Terhune Parks. This riverside region gives you access to the Teaneck Greenway, a 3.5-mile hiking trail that follows the Hackensack River. This trail offers more of a hiking experience away from the downtown area along with scenic views of the river.
