Downtown Verona is listed as one of the top three places to live in New Jersey thanks to its hometown feel and access to local greenways while still being in close proximity to Newark and New York. The downtown area has a mix of commercial and residential spaces and gives you access to most of the amenities you might need. Food and corner stores will take care of your needs while walking and, while you won’t find pet stores quite so conveniently, there are some not too far away from the downtown area. Vets and groomers are available in downtown Verona close enough for anyone that lives in the neighborhood to access very easily.

Verona climate is considered temperate compared to that of Jersey City and New York with slightly less snowfall and cooler temperatures in the summer. Even so, be prepared as the snow and heat could make walking more challenging.

The terrain in Downtown Verona is very mixed. The main road is very nicely maintained with wide sidewalks and the presence of trees and even some grass in places. Stray off the main road and you will find hills, but many of the hills are gentle inclines that should not present a problem. Most of the neighborhood areas are lined with sidewalks and have grassy shoulders and a lot of trees. This makes walking a bit more pleasant, especially on warm days.

While Verona does not get quite as hot as some of its neighbors, it can still see temperatures in the 90s. When the weather is like this, you need to use special caution when walking on sidewalks. The concrete retains heat, making the sidewalks very hot and potentially hot enough to burn your dog’s feet. When the weather is this warm, make sure to either walk early in the morning or late in the eveing.

Verona is blessed with some nice greenways in the area starting with Verona Park which is just off the downtown area. This park is laced with walking paths and, while these are made from concrete, they are lined with ample grass, so allow your pet to make use of the grass while you walk to protect their feet. Both the park and the lake nearby are quite large, so you can make a good walk out of going around the lake. In addition, there are lots of trees to keep you cool on hot summer days.

Just to the northwest of town is the Hilltop Reservation which is a large county park that offers miles of trails, both paved and unpaved. The park is on a hill, so expect the walk to be a bit more challenging than other areas. It is a great place to come if you want to combine a workout with walking your furry companion!
