Elk Ridge is a small neighborhood in the far northeast corner of Las Vegas, Nevada. It is a recent development built in a sparsely populated outskirt of the city and its northern border looks out onto a large valley with the Rocky Mountains prominent in the distance. Most of the homes are pleasant, upscale buildings with architecture characteristics that are common among many west coast and southwestern homes.

The weather in Las Vegas comes from its desert environment and climate. It experiences dry, hot summers where average highs are almost always at or above 100 degrees. Its winters are relatively mild with temperatures hardly dropping below 40 degrees. Due to the dryness in the air and the near constant exposure to sun in the winter months, make sure to protect yourself with sunscreen and to keep both you and your dog well hydrated before and after a walk.

The terrain in Elk Ridge is extremely flat because it is in a valley that is between different nearby mountain ranges. It is located in the middle of Nevada’s Mojave Desert which means its terrain can get very harsh if you venture outside the more developed areas of the city. The natural landscape is full of rocks and sand with almost no green areas to be found. Though there are plenty of amazing views of vast swathes of undeveloped land, the environment in Elk Ridge is still fairly artificial due to the number of paved roads and houses in the area.

There won’t be much foot or street traffic in Elk Ridge because it is a somewhat closed-off community. A small brick enclosure surrounds the neighborhood and it can only be entered from the south off of O’Hare Avenue or from the north off of Log Cabin Way which helps to avoid busy streets.

There is one large park at the center of Elk Ridge but no other greenways or parks exist within the borders of the neighborhood. Red Deer Park is the park in the center of the area and it has a large amount of green space and paved walking trails that run around an open field. It almost acts like a shared backyard between several of the houses in the center of the neighborhood and is a popular spot for people in the community to relax with their dogs during their daily outings.

You won’t find any parks in the neighboring community of Quarterhorse Falls, but directly to the south, you can walk to Ironsend Park in the Centennial Village North neighborhood. This park is a little bit smaller than Red Deer but it has a similar open green field and paved trails at the edges of the green space.
