West Amherst is the northwestern section of the town of Amherst, New York. Major roadways are all easily accessible for walking and feature a mixture of residential, commercial, and retail locations. Sidewalks are generally well-maintained, but dog walkers should be aware of the high amount of traffic that populates these roads and use caution when crossing them. The rest of West Amherst consists of older, quiet neighborhoods on tree-lined streets that make for comfortable, safe walking areas. Within walking and driving distance are two parks perfect for dogs: Nature View Park and the Bark Park within Ellicott Island Park.

In the summer and fall, the weather in West Amherst is generally comfortable, although at times summer can be very warm and humid. On hot days, make sure to keep your dog off of hot sidewalks and pavement. Spring can be very rainy and muddy, while winter is often cold and snowy. Be prepared with the appropriate gear!

West Amherst is mostly flat with some smaller hillier sections nearby the local parks. This is generally ideal for dogs who require a bit more of an easy-going walk and may present more of a challenge for those looking for more difficult terrain for strenuous exercise. The neighborhoods have sidewalks that are easy to navigate and are lined by mature, shady trees which make West Amherst ideal for a dog walk on a warm day as the trees provide ample amounts of shade.

If you are in the mood for busier fare, any of the primary roadways offer sightseeing opportunities with plenty of shops, plazas, and older homes. Most cross streets have designated crosswalks, so use caution when crossing these roads with your dog and be courteous to other pedestrians. Cross using the directional lights and don't jaywalk as these are roads with multiple lanes and traffic going anywhere from 45 to 60mph.

West Amherst provides access to two parks for dogs and their walkers. Nature View Park, which is on the eastern tail of the town, offers a challenging yet engaging trail walk. The trail is not paved, but natural, so be prepared with hiking shoes as you will be walking through dense foliage in areas. Keep your dog on a leash as there may be other walkers and hikers on the narrow path.

Near the heart of West Amherst is Ellicott Creek Park which features The Bark Park on Ellicott Island. This dog park exists entirely on an island within the central park and has two areas for dogs to wade out into the water The Bark Park does not have separate enclosures for small and large dogs, so keep an eye out for smaller pups. Fresh water, a paw washing station, and even a small library are available at this park for all to enjoy.
