A mix of apartment buildings and three-story Victorian houses makes Bedford Park indistinguishable from a lot of neighborhoods in New York. It's not until you start looking closely at restaurants and the people of the neighborhood that you start to see the differences that make Bedford Park unique. This is an area of immigrants and diversity and much of the neighborhood is ethnically defined by the businesses that inhabit the smaller communities. This makes the neighborhood a treat to walk in with plenty to see. There are also pet stores and vet clinics just to the north and south.

The weather here will, for the most part, allow you to walk in all four seasons, but the weather can be dramatic enough that you will not always want to. Snow, freezing temperatures, wind, and rain are all a part of New York winters. In the summer, the biggest enemy is the heat and humidity.

Bedford Park is not, by any means, a neighborhood that you would describe as hilly, but it does have some hills in it. The hills are mainly gentle inclines that are perfect for adding a bit of extra work into your daily walks. You can easily avoid the hills if you have no interest in getting any serious exercise as there are plenty of flat areas in Bedford that make walking a pleasure.

Bedford is definitely an urban area, and as such, you can expect to do most of your walking on concrete with little in the way of grass surfaces. There are trees in some areas, including some that are tall and provide a bit of shade. If you are walking on warm days, you might consider planning out a walk where most of the sidewalk is protected from the sun. It will make it much more comfortable for your pup!

There are a number of greenways in the area for you to enjoy. The Mosholu Parkway is a landscaped highway but has an organized greenway and park that you can use for walking. There is a path that runs up the greenway and the area has ample grass and trees to make a long walk pleasant for both of you. The pathways go up into the Friends of Van Cortland Park which is part nature preserve and part trails. If you continue to follow the trails, they lead up into the rest of Van Cortland Park where you will find even more trails and a dog park. The entire park encompasses 1146 acres total and is some of the last vestiges of New York City’s native woodlands.

You also have access to Harris Park and Jerome Park to the west of the neighborhood. Jerome park includes a 1.5-mile jogging path which goes around the Jerome Park Reservoir.
